What are my options?

There are several factors to consider when exploring reconstruction options following a mastectomy. These factors include the extent of the mastectomy, the type of disease treatments received, body type, and the timing of the mastectomy. These factors will determine whether reconstruction can be done at the same time as the mastectomy or if it needs to be delayed until a later date. Below are some potential advantages to certain reconstruction options.

Immediate Breast Reconstruction

Immediate breast reconstruction (IBR) surgery begins at the time of mastectomy. After your surgeon removes your breast tissue, they'll begin reconstructive surgery. IBR is typically offered to women with earlier-stage diseases that don't need additional treatments (such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy).

Potential Advantages

May eliminate an operation and save you money with fewer days in the hospital and less time required for recovery
Can help you feel more confident coming out of a mastectomy knowing you're already on the path to the results you want

Potential Disadvantages

Surgery and recovery time may be longer
Could have a higher risk of complications after surgery if other treatments are combined with reconstruction (talk with your surgeon about what's best for you)
